Welsh Government's £4.8m Support Regarding Food Poverty and Insecurity in Wales.

Disgrifiad

Dr Gwilym contributed to Radio Cymru's Post Prynhawn programme on the Welsh Government's £4.8 million funding announcement to address food poverty and food insecurity in Wales. During the discussion, he highlighted that emergency food provision has become a recurring feature of the Welsh response to food insecurity, but argued that such interventions often address the symptoms rather than the underlying causes of poverty. He emphasised that food poverty should be understood primarily as an issue of inadequate income and economic insecurity, rather than a shortage of food availability.

Dr Gwilym also drew attention to positive examples of longer-term, community-based approaches that seek to tackle the root causes of food insecurity, including local food networks, social supermarkets, and other initiatives that promote sustainable access to affordable food while strengthening community resilience. He noted that Wales does not face a food shortage; rather, the challenge lies in ensuring that individuals and families have sufficient financial resources and security to access available food. Through this contribution, he helped bring social policy perspectives to a public debate on poverty, inequality, and food security in Wales.

This engagement contributed to public understanding of the structural factors underpinning food poverty and the importance of balancing immediate support measures with longer-term policy solutions.
