Crynodeb

This article examines the phenomenon of ego-inflation in academic settings through the perspectives of Jung’s understanding of unconscious identification and Nietzsche’s critique of modern institutions. Informed by nearly three decades of academic experience, the author argues that institutional pressures fuel ego-driven behaviours such as grandiosity and intellectual posturing, often masking deeper insecurities related to academic performance. The article highlights the inherent challenges and contradictions in teaching and studying Jungian psychology, which places self-awareness as its core. Nietzsche’s mental collapse formed the basis of Jung’s most detailed case study on ego inflation. This article revisits the legitimacy of Jung’s account, arguing that Nietzsche was acutely aware of the dangers of ego inflation, particularly within university settings with their propensity to supress creativity through conformity. It further discusses Nietzsche’s advocacy for environments that transcend institutional constraints to foster authentic self-awareness. The author highlights how both therapeutic and academic spaces often prioritise intellectual detachment over holistic engagement, despite their stated aim of nurturing psychological growth. Drawing on Nietzsche’s call for a lived philosophy with Jung’s focus on shadow integration, the paper stresses the need of cultivating physical and intellectual spaces that resist institutional homogenisation and ground self-reflective practices in material reality.
