Purpose This study aims to demonstrate the practical application of a collaborative intervention (DIALOG+) and the outcomes for an individual suffering with schizophrenia. Design/methodology/approach Case study methodology. Findings Using DIALOG+ in mental health clinical practice can act as a beneficial therapeutic adjunct to established care-planning processes. Outcomes in this case study demonstrated improvements in a number of life domains, resulting in a significantly improved recovery. Research limitations/implications Future research should evaluate the implementation of DIALOG+ in different service settings and with different diagnoses within the domain of mental health and physical health. Practical implications There is scope for further implementation of DIALOG+ within mental health service practice across a range of service settings and countries. Training in DIALOG+ is brief and inexpensive, with the approach having very good face validity with patients of these services. Social implications The DIALOG scale is a life domains scale with an emphasis on social determinants that are impacted by mental illness. Improvements in social functioning are fundamental for sustained recovery from serious mental illnesses. Planning collaborative interventions within these domains would appear to improve the likelihood of such recovery. Originality/value The description of the DIALOG+ approach within this case study will be of value to practicing mental health clinicians across a range of service settings.
