Crynodeb
This chapter examines the role of the outdoor learning professional in the public arena, focusing on how practitioners and professional bodies engage with policy, lobbying, and representation within the UK. Drawing primarily on the devolved contexts of Wales and Scotland, where outdoor learning has been most explicitly embedded within education policy, the chapter traces historical and contemporary forms of professional influence, from early advocacy through to curriculum reform, regulation, and professional standards. It explores the mechanisms through which outdoor learning is represented at governmental and institutional levels, including formal consultation, cross-sector partnerships, professional bodies, and informal advocacy. The chapter also critically interrogates tensions between grassroots practice and institutional lobbying, raising questions of voice, inclusion, and professional legitimacy. It argues that for outdoor learning to move beyond rhetorical endorsement towards systemic entitlement, the profession must develop greater political literacy and strategic capacity, while remaining critically attentive to whose voices are amplified or marginalised in policy spaces.
