Athletic careers increasingly extend into motherhood, challenging the traditional notion that sport ends when motherhood begins. Whilst there is growing recognition of the psychological experiences of both elite and recreational postpartum athletes, little is known about the unique experiences of triathletes seeking to return to sport postpartum. Triathlon is a physically demanding and time-intensive sport, and peak performance for women often coincides with childbearing years. This intersection presents a complex set of challenges; therefore, this study explores experiences of ten triathlete mothers across varying levels of competition to understand how they navigated psychological challenges postpartum. The study employed semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis within a critical realist framework to explore how triathlete mothers interpret and understand their experiences postpartum. Analysis revealed four key themes; The “motherhood shift” and embracing change; Motivation, meaning, and the mental mindset; Social pressures, perceptions, and support; and Navigating wellbeing as a mother. Participants displayed resilience and strategic planning to sustain training, they also encountered barriers including guilt, and inadequate support systems. Supportive partners, goal setting, and reframing sport as a contributor to personal and family wellbeing were critical facilitators. However, social media comparisons and internalized ideals of “superwoman” athletes often compounded feelings of inadequacy. These findings highlight the nuanced psychological journey of postpartum triathlete mothers and the need for holistic, flexible support frameworks. Recommendations are provided for coaches, psychologists, and sport organizations to develop inclusive practices that foster sustainable athletic participation for mothers across all levels.
