Circadian rhythms of host immune activity and of their parasites and microbiomes are likely pivotal to health and disease resistance. The integration of chronotherapeutic approaches to disease mitigation in managed animals, however, is yet to be realised. In salmonid aquaculture, light manipulation is commonly used to enhance growth and control reproduction but may have unknown negative consequences for fish health. In this talk, I explore my groups work investigating the impact of photoperiods, lice infections and feed timing on rainbow trout immune and microbiome rhythms, and the daily patterns of freshwater lice behaviour and gene expression. Together, we demonstrate current aquaculture practices may be disrupting natural fish rhythms in immunity and thus negatively impacting health. In addition, by understanding the daily dynamics of fish ectoparasites, we propose new avenues for employing chronobiological approaches to managing disease issues in fish farming.| Period | 26 Feb 2024 → 1 Mar 2024 |
