    Description

    " A Work in Progress"

Speaking as a performer of new music, the presentation looks at the practice of composition from the perspective of the classically-trained instrumentalist. Focusing on my own compositions, I will outline their formal facets, the utilisation of technology and also the physical markers that are in place in lieu of a score. I am engaged in a practice of instrumental sound art in which the cultural notion of a musical instrument is questioned
A performance of one of my works-in-progress for bass flute and live
electronics and discuss my perceptions which led to this new composition, relating these to concepts of philosopher Martin Heidegger, composer Pierre Schaeffer and the cultural theories of Norman Denzin and Mark Neumann.

My proposal is that conceptualisation of music of which the performer is a source is a compositional potential that has a particula rrelevance and insight in contemporary instrumental practice.
