The latest session in our lunchtime Chinese arts series brought a burst of energy and imagination to campus, as participants explored the expressive world of plum blossom painting through the distinctive ink-blowing method. Far from a traditional brush-led workshop, this session encouraged playful experimentation, guiding ink across the page with gentle breaths to form lively, organic branches.
Tutors from the Bangor University Confucius Institute introduced the symbolic meaning of the plum blossom – a cherished emblem of resilience and renewal in Chinese culture – before participants tried their hand at dotting delicate blossoms onto their blown-ink branches. The room quickly filled with striking, spontaneous compositions, each piece reflecting the movement and creativity of its maker.
The atmosphere was relaxed yet full of discovery, with attendees enjoying an hour away from their busy day to try something new, expressive, and quietly meditative.
