Street Art, Face Politics: Reconfiguring Violence in JR's Paris Projects

This paper examines the phenomenon of portraiture in street art — or, ‘photograffi’ — with reference to the work of one its most well-known practitioners, street artist JR. Reflecting on the political meanings of the human face in urban space, the paper situates these reflections in specific relation to the Paris suburbs. The paper aims to explore JR’s work as a moving interaction of urban histoires, spaces and visualities, and to articulate how this interaction reconfigures meanings surrounding the violent suburban events of 2005. Finally, the paper will consider the politics of this reconfiguration in the light of the suburban regeneration policies of the French government’s Greater Paris programme.
