Workshop to develop methods in determining effort metrics for bottom-contacting static gears

Description

This workshop will establish the scientific basis for quantifying the seafloor contact of static fishing gears, enabling the "significant adverse impacts" criteria outlined in the EU Deep-sea Access Regulation (2016/2336) and FAO International Guidelines.

WKSTGEM is directly linked to a special request to ICES from European Commission (DG MARE) to provide advice in relation to VMEs. The work carried out by WKSTGEM will contribute to completing this task by evaluating and reviewing recent literature, developing methods to quantify effort metrics for different gear types and assessing the practical feasibility of the application of the proposed metrics.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
