Description of impact
We were commissioned with partners by WHO to undertake a suite of qualitative evidence syntheses to inform production of a WHO guideline on global task shifting of healthcare workers to improve outcomes for women and children. This was the first time that WHO competitively commissioned this type of review in a guideline development process. The resultant WHO guideline published in 2012 has been implemented globally. The recent MRC international health programme funded two studies that included evaluation of task shifting strategies recommended by the guideline.
Future epidemiological and public health monitoring by WHO will help determine the effect of task shifting strategies recommended in the guideline.
