Personal profile

Overview

I am a Research Fellow in Wales Kidney Research Unit, which is an interdisciplinary, all-Wales partnership funded by Health and Care Research Wales for the study of diagnosis, prevention, treatment and social context of kidney disease. Within this role I will develop and deliver health services research, and develop research capacity and capability amongst nurses and allied health professionals working within kidney care in Wales.

Building on my clinical career in kidney nursing, my research has focused on kidney care, particularly peritoneal dialysis. My RCBC-funded PhD was an ethnography exploring patients’ and families’ experiences of living with peritoneal dialysis (Baillie et al. 2012, Baillie and Lankshear 2014, Baillie and Lankshear 2015, Baillie 2018). Subsequently, my Postdoctoral Fellowship was a mixed methods study examining patients’ and families’ knowledge and experiences of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (Baillie et al. 2018, Baillie et al. 2021, Baillie et al. 2023). Recently, I collaborated with an international panel of kidney nurses to co-develop nursing sensitive indicators for peritoneal dialysis nursing, which have been endorsed by the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association (Baillie et al. 2025).  I co-lead the Association of Nephrology Nurses Research Community of Practice (Baillie et al. 2025). In 2024 I became the Associate Editor of the Journal of Renal Care.

I have undertaken a range of qualitative and mixed methods research encompassing long-term conditions and public health. I have supervised three doctoral students to completion. Currently I am supervising Sarah McMillan’s PhD, funded by Kidney Research UK, which is exploring risk factors for complications in dialysis access, and patient’s perspectives of complications.

Formerly, I was a Senior Lecturer (Adult Nursing) at Cardiff University, where I taught, assessed and supervised undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students. I held Module Leader and Programme Manager roles, acted as Vice Chair for the School Research Ethics Committee, and was RCBC Wales Deputy Lead for Cardiff University. I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2021.
