Research

Leona completed her PhD in archaeology in 2022 at Bangor and lectures on a range of historical archaeology and heritage topics from the invasion of the Romans in 43AD up to the heritage and archaeology of space. She was fortunate enough to be involved in a Viking age excavation at Llanbedrgoch in 2012 which has led to a particular interest in Viking Wales. Leona’s current areas of research are focused on the interaction between heritage sites and a growth in dark tourism; the archaeology and heritage of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales and the archaeology of First World War internment. Leona is part of ‘Project Dorothea’ an initiative in partnership with Dorothea Pumped Hydro aimed at preserving and revitalising the heritage of Dorothea Quarry in Dyffryn Nantlle. Leona is also involved with Wales’ first ecomuseum based on the Llyn Peninsula aimed at redesigning the current societal model of static museum to a dynamic museum within a living environment beyond the confines of architecture. Leona currently teaches modules at both undergraduate and Master’s level, including: Introduction to Heritage and History; Introduction to Historic Archaeology and Guardians of Heritage. Her new module focused on Dark Tourism is due to run in September 2025. Leona is the employability lead for history, archaeology and heritage students and maintains close connections with local and global heritage partners such as UNESCO Co-ordinators, World Heritage UK, Heneb, Cadw and the National Museum of Wales, all of which have received Bangor students on invaluable work placements this year.
