My research explores how language, voice and technology shape people's experiences of belonging in bilingual language communities.

I specialise in Welsh phonetics, bilingualism and language technologies for lesser-resourced languages. My work examines how people learn and use Welsh, with a particular focus on new speakers of Welsh and adult second-language learning.

I am interested in how linguistic variation influences people's confidence, identity and sense of inclusion within language communities, and how research can inform inclusive approaches to language learning, policy and technology.

My primary research interests are in Welsh phonetics, bilingualism, language attitudes and language technologies for lesser-resourced languages. My research explores how people learn, produce and perceive speech, and how linguistic variation influences experiences of identity, inclusion and belonging within language communities.

A key strand of my work examines how adults acquire Welsh speech sounds when learning Welsh as a second language. I am interested in how factors such as linguistic experience, exposure and motivation influence pronunciation development, and how different forms of Welsh speech are perceived and evaluated by listeners.

I work closely with the Language Technologies Unit in Canolfan Bedwyr, Bangor University, contributing to research and resources in Welsh language technology. This includes work with the Paldaruo Speech Corpus of Welsh, a resource supporting research and development in Welsh speech technologies.

I am Course Lead for the MSc Language Technologies and teach across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Linguistics, English Language and Bilingualism. My teaching includes phonetics and phonology, bilingualism, second language speech learning, and communication and technology.

I am committed to research-led and inclusive teaching, supporting students to develop analytical skills, confidence and the ability to apply linguistic knowledge beyond the classroom.

I supervise undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research projects in areas including Welsh phonetics, bilingualism, speech learning, language attitudes and language technologies. I also contribute to Welsh-medium and bilingual teaching and supervision within the Department. 

I collaborate with researchers and external partners across education and technology to develop research and resources supporting Welsh language learning, bilingualism and language technologies.

I led the Cyflwyniad i Ieithyddiaeth project (Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol), co-editing a modern Welsh-medium linguistics textbook. The project brought together researchers across Wales and supported the development of Welsh linguistics terminology and resources, including the translation of the International Phonetic Alphabet into Welsh. Cyflwyniad i Ieithyddiaeth is now used across Welsh universities to support Welsh-medium linguistics and language education.

I have also secured and supported funded doctoral research with organisations including the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, National Centre for Learning Welsh, and KESS II with Welsh Government, focusing on Welsh pronunciation, pronunciation teaching and speech recognition. I also supervise doctoral researchers funded through the ESRC Wales DTP and Welsh Graduate School for the Social Sciences.
