Abstract
This collaborative project between Bangor University, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and Denbighshire County Council (DCC) sought to analyse the ecosystem benefits of delivering the Climate and Ecological Change Strategy of DCC, as well as the community’s perceptions of these environmental changes happening in their neighbourhood. The coastal town of Rhyl was used as case study and the project compared Rhyl residents’ thoughts against a nationally representative sample of the United Kingdom. UKCEH ran five ecosystem service models to calculate the benefits of existing and planned green infrastructure (GI) in Rhyl. Bangor University developed a 5-minute online survey to gather social data on perspectives from across the UK on tree planting and establishing wildflower meadows and assessed the Rhyl community’s perceptions of these environmental changes compared to the UK sample.
