Abstract

Die verrückten mädchen von Mona ('The Crazy Maids of Mona') is a composition for Soprano and Piano Trio. It starts and ends by quoting from the sixth of Beethoven's Welsh Folksong arrangements ('The Fair Maids of Mona'). In-between these bookending moments the music undergoes several abrupt shifts in mood and atmosphere in order to ironically represent the many negative depictions of female characters in nineteenth century culture and fiction, as examined by Elaine Showalter and others in books such as 'The Female Malady: Women, Madness, and English Culture, 1830–1980.'
