Abstract
The ability to communicate effectively is fundamental to succeeding in both academic and professional settings, yet many students lack opportunities to practise and refine these skills in a supportive environment. The Practising Oral Presentation Skills (POPS) programme at Bangor University addresses this need by embedding peer-led oral presentation sessions within modules such as Academic Writing and Research Methods. Students participate actively by delivering impromptu and prepared speeches, chairing sessions, and providing constructive feedback to peers. Central to the programme are POPS mentors, undergraduate students who are trained to facilitate sessions, guide their peers, and foster a collaborative learning environment that promotes growth and confidence. Activities in the programme also help students develop transferable skills such as providing structured feedback, setting and achieving goals, and articulating their skills and experiences clearly in preparation for job interviews. Additionally, POPS mentors introduce students to AI tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint Speaker Coach, Microsoft PowerPoint Designer, and ChatGPT, helping them refine their presentation and employability skills. This workshop will explore the structure of the POPS programme, including how peer-led sessions are organised and supported. Participants will engage in discussions on adapting peer-led initiatives to their own teaching contexts, with a focus on enhancing oral communication and employability skills in higher education. We will also explore how AI tools can be used to support these efforts.
