Abstract
The paper examines how the laws of Wales in the Middle Ages were shaped by influences from a variety of legal sources, and how the clash of legal cultures produced distinctive legal responses. It argues for and illustrates an assessment of Welsh law within a broader western European legal context, and that a proper understanding of the laws of Wales can only be achieved within that wider context.
