Abstract

This special issue of the Journal of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity on Pentecostal philosophy consists of five articles. The first article by Simo Frestadius on ‘How to Best Engage in Pentecostal Philosophy? An Appraisal and a Proposal’ evaluates the visions of Smith and Simmons for Pentecostal philosophy, before offering an alternative in the light of Alasdair MacIntyre’s Thomism. The second article, ‘The Song of Life: Affect Attunement and Pentecostal Epistemology’ by Karl Inge Tangen, explores Pentecostal epistemology through the interdisciplinary metaphor of affect attunement by drawing from music theory, psychology, and theology. The third article by Knut-Willy Sæther on ‘Fallibilism and Pentecostal Theological Epistemology’ continues the theme of epistemology but does so in dialogue with the American Pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce and his concept of fallibilism. The fourth article titled, ‘Pentecostalism as Indigenous Modern Folk Christianity and the Potential for a Pentecostal Humanism’ by L. William Oliverio Jr., argues that the Pentecostal movement can be interpreted philosophically as a type of modern folk Christianity, which has implications for understanding the relationship between Pentecostalism and modernity, as well as how the Pentecostal movement could develop in late modernity. Finally, Deborah M. Davies in her article, ‘Pentecostalism in the Post-truth Era: Amos Yong and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in Dialogue’ explores important contemporary themes – such as, how Pentecostals should engage in public discourse in a post-truth context – with respect to these two important late-modern thinkers.
