Student thesis: Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to offer a comprehensive and cohesive discussion of the topic
of sanctification as it appears in the Johannine writings. This thesis is intended to offer a
holistic treatment of the topic of sanctification which includes direct Johannine discussions
of sanctification and cleansing, as well as other Johannine topics that are relevant to the
discussion, including holiness, the significance of ‘remaining’ in Jesus, and post-conversion
sin. I seek to offer this contribution from the vantage point of my own confessional context,
that of a Pentecostal Community. The method this study employs is that of offering an
effective history of specific Johannine texts on sanctification in early North American
Pentecostal periodical literature, followed by a narrative and exegetical analysis of the
pertinent passages in John’s Gospel and a literary and exegetical analysis of the pertinent
passages in 1 John. In my final chapter, I make overtures toward constructing a modern
Pentecostal Johannine theology of sanctification, as well as engaging Pentecostal
scholarship concerning the topic of Johannine sanctification as it relates to the possibility of future contributions
