A Voice for the Voiceless: Amplifying the Silent Victims of Environmental Injustice

Abstract

This PhD explores the role of music in amplifying the voices of the voiceless, those beings and landscapes profoundly impacted by human actions, yet unable to advocate for themselves. Central to the research is the creation of a portfolio of compositions that addresses themes of environmental and social injustice, examining how specific compositional choices, musical structures and modes of delivery shape music’s capacity to function as advocacy. Initially focused on expanding the repertoire for modern harp music, the project evolved into an inquiry into how compositional practice itself can operate as a research method and how music can communicate messages of sustainability and environmental responsibility to diverse audiences.
