In this thesis I explore the mechanisms by which silent hypoxaemia in COVID-19 may arise. I present a scoping review of the literature on exercise testing within the acute setting to guide with safe discharge in acute cardiopulmonary diseases including COVID-19. I then present the results of my experimental work in establishing the safety, feasibility and utility of the 40 steps desaturation test, which is in widespread use as a tool for assessing suspected cases of COVID-19.
