Abstract
Variables that affect the operant responding of human subjects on fixed-interval schedules; were investigated in eight experiments. Layout of the experimentalmanipulandum, conditioning histories, external discriminative stimuli and experimenter instructions, were all found to bear on the way the human subject
instructs himself about the experimental task.
The results were discussed with regard to the generality of the findings from research with nonhuman subjects to human operant behaviour.
