Metamorphosis

    Student thesis: Doctor of Philosophy

    Abstract

This portfolio comprises seven electroacoustic compositions which were completed between January 2002 and July 2005. The total time for all seven pieces is approximately 92 minutes. Throughout the PhD the underlying theme is the
metamorphosing of sounds - hence the title Metamorphosis. Sounds which exist in one state are transformed to another, usually moving through various stages of evolution. Another important aspect of this portfolio is a special project comprising three pieces which focus entirely on the life and culture of South East Asia. The project, which comes to just over 48 minutes, has been titled 'The South East Asia Project' and was chosen as a direct result of the inspiration that I received from my personal sonic experience as I lived, worked and travelled around South East Asia. The South East Asia Project and Metamorphosis connect on a very personal level where I also experienced a gradual 'metamorphosis' in my personality whilst living in Malaysia. After leaving South East Asia I developed a fascination for metamorphosing sounds and objects which I have increasingly projected into my compositions.
