Abstract
This thesis looks at the legislative framework concerning the protection of historicshipwrecks in the United Kingdom, and not only determines whether or not the law
requires reform, but what the best course of reform would be. In doing so, the thesis
examines four key research themes: the suitability of the current law in the UK
relating to historic shipwrecks; the international legal framework concerning the
protection of underwater cultural heritage; the effect of new powers over maritime
regulation under devolution on historic wreck salvage in the UK; and the feasibility of using salvage law as a mechanism of protecting underwater cultural heritage.
