Overview

My role in the School of Music and Media is centered around world music cultures, songwriting, jazz and improvisation. I have worked extensively as a composer and producer of music for television and theatre, as well as producing, directing and composing creative projects such as art films, songs and albums. I also perform live with various groups, and organise and participate in improvisation ensemble events.

A major research project has been on musical accessibility in terms of how music is understood, valued and accessed across aesthetic, cultural and social boundaries and this work has been published by Cambridge University Press in my monograph The Accessibility of Music.

Currently I am working on cultural practices such as yoga, samba and capoeira, which are popular in the 'West' but originate elsewhere. I am interested in how such practices are adopted and adapted, and how they function in contemporary societies.
