N2 - This historical introduction begins by explaining the slow emergence of Wales as a clearly defined territory during the early medieval period. It goes on to assess the impact of the Norman settlements and the creation of the Welsh March, and how the Edwardian conquest of 1282 changed the map of Wales, along with its ruling elite and its sense of political and cultural identity. This chapter draws attention to the influences and enviroments which shaped the literature of medieval Wales.
