N2 - Camouflage was jointly commissioned by BBC Radio 3and Tŷ Cerdd for the 90th anniversary celebrations of theBBC National Orchestra of Wales in 2018. The work waspremiered by the orchestra under Jac van Steen atHoddinott Hall, Cardiff on the 28th of March in 2018 and isdedicated to the memory of a fine piccolo player who sadlyis no longer with us.According to the Oxford Dictionary one definition of theword camouflage is ‘the natural colouring or form of ananimal which enables it to blend in with its surroundings.’Examples of this are numerous in nature, with primeexamples possibly being the patterns on a leopard’s skin orthe colours on the bittern’s feathers. This piece essentiallydeals with masking musical ideas into the orchestraltextures, allowing them to resurface at various points withinthe course of the work. The repeated two-note idea at theopening and later the ascending scale are graduallyconcealed within thick blocks of orchestral texturesconstructed of layers of identical ideas, similar to a patternfound in a typical camouflage. Further concealing isachieved by sustained chords that gradually moves fromone sectional to another. Towards the end the main musicalmaterial is clearly revealed on the trumpets only todisappear into a blanket of ascending and descending scalesthat eventually disintegrates into a closing playful solo inthe piccolo part.
