N2 - Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time, and there is a growing body of scientific research suggesting that it will cause an increase in armed conflicts in the future. However this is by no means a foregone conclusion. In fact, the relationship between armed conflict and climate change is extremely complex and highly nuanced. This Chapter traces the history of the connection between armed conflict and climatic conditions, before examining some of the ways in which climate change is expected to cause conflict in the future. It then examines the role that relevant fields of international law may play before concluding with a discussion of future developments likely to affect this issue going forward.
