This journal article delves into the theoretical underpinnings of a study aimed at understanding the development of social skills, empathy, and compassion in children and young people in the United Kingdom. It discusses various theories related to social skills and their significance in shaping positive outcomes in individuals. Furthermore, it explores the evolving landscape of education, which now emphasises academic achievement and social and emotional learning (SEL) to prepare students for life's challenges. The article also examines the changing experiences of young people in modern societies, highlighting the importance of social competence in various aspects of their lives. The concept of social skills and their relevance to relationships, employment, and overall quality of life is discussed, along with the potential consequences of deficits in social skills. Additionally, the article outlines different methods for assessing social skills and the role of socio-economic status (SES) in influencing children's development.
