Description
Creative Conversations: a new attitude change approach for care staff‘Creative Conversations’ is an arts-based programme for developing the skills of dementia care staff. It is based on, and inspired by two models that utilise the arts for improving dementia care; the Descartes project (Zeilig et al., 2015) and The Arts and Older People Project at The Courtyard (The Arts and Older People Project & Killick, 2015). The material was devised by John Killick, who also delivered the sessions. The project is a partnership between Bangor University, Dementia Positive, and Flintshire County Council Social Services. Care staff from fourteen care homes in North Wales attended Creative Conversations sessions in the second half of 2017.There were three elements to Creative Conversations: first being workshops; the second comprising follow-up activities delivered by the participants in their workplaces, and the third supplementary stimulating material provided on line. The course involved no element of instruction. It was entirely experiential, and involved the arts: film, music, art, photography, poetry. Everything was related to dementia. The emphasis was on participation and experimentation. The overall aim was attitude change by widening the field of vision of those who took part. This workshop consists of a snapshot of a session from the innovative course for care staff. John Killick, world-renowned writer and partner on the project, will give participants the opportunity to take part in a session and experience first-hand the main principles instilled in the programme. This session will take the form of exposure to certain elements of the materials and approach. There will be an opportunity for the discussion of the materials employed and their possible effects.Key pointsFrom attending the session, people will gain the opportunity to:- Learn about the 'Creative Conversations' project, a partnership between Bangor University, Dementia Positive, and Flintshire County Council Social Services.- Experience first-hand a snapshot of a session from the innovative course for care staff, led by John Killick, world-renowned writer and partner on the project.- Discuss the materials employed and their possible effects.
