Overview
From 1976 to 2010 I worked for the NHS as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with responsibility for services for children with behavioural problems and from 1988 - 2010 I held a joint appointment with the Bangor University school of Psychology as an honorary Professor undertaking research. On my retirement from the NHS in 2010 I was appointed Professor and have continued to work at the University at the Centre for Evidence Based Early Intervention which I established in 2002.
I have run and developed parenting programmes since 1976 and supported the introduction of programmes into preventive Sure Start services including child and teacher programmes across Wales. I have worked with the Welsh and UK Governments in supporting early intervention but also advised the WHO and worked with UNICEF and other overseas NGOs.
I was awarded an OBE for services to children in 2011. I have held grants totalling several million pounds and led many research projects on aspects of services, primarily supporting the parents of socially disadvantaged children with behavioural and other challenges. Since 2000, have supervised many successful Masters by Research and PhD students. I run training workshops in Bangor and continue to research and support interventions for parents, children and teachers. I have published extensively and lectured and taught in many European countries as well as in Australia and South Africa. In 2012 I co-wrote the Parenting for Lifelong Health programme to support parenting in the global south. I contributed to its initial RCT in South Africa and subsequently to trials in the Philippines and Thailand. Since 2017 I have been involved in parenting research across eastern Europe and have worked in Montenegro with UNICEF since 2017. I am currently contributing to work with Montenegrin Roma community and developing a programme for parents of children with neurodiversity.
Over the last 5 years I led the NIHR funded multisite RCT to evaluate the Finnish school based KiVa bullying prevention programmed for which we recruited 11,000 children. The positive results in favour of KiVa have recently been published.
Current project include the parenting work in Montenegro with UNICEF, work in Wales to promote school readiness skills through the development of children’s language and communication skills and further developing COPING, an online programme to support parents. Alongside this I continue to teach and to write up and publish research results.
