Research
After my undergraduate in Ocean Science at Bangor University and an MSc degree in Climate Sciences at the University of Bern in Switzerland, I completed my PhD at Bangor University under supervision of Dr Mattias Green and Prof James Scourse. I then spent two years as a PostDoc at Oregon State University collaborating with Prof Andreas Schmittner before moving back to Bangor University to work on two international EU projects, BlueFish and COCKLES investigating larval transport patterns and the impact of oceangraphic/tidal features on genetic differentiation. Currenly, I am investigating deep-time climate and ocean dynamics, focussing on the Archean period when life first developed on Earth. This research is focussing on understanding the long-term drivers of climate and Earth and the reasons a planet may have a climate in the habitable climate range.
My research to date has looked at long-term changes in the tides due to variations in sea-level and climate and has focussed on the impacts of tidal changes on the large-scale ocean circulation during the Last Glacial Maximum and thus climate. I am also investigating the impact of the tides on shelf sea oceangraphic features and their impacts for foraging of Manx shearwaters, larval transport patterns and baterioplankton communities which are all heavily influenced by the tide. Understanding these links and their interannual variability will aid to understand the implications of the resilience of these systems to future climate change.
