Finding Spirituality in a Godless World
Research output: Contribution to conference › Abstract › peer-review
As society becomes less God-focused, many of us are left with a spiritual void which demands filling. Whether we do this by exchanging prayer for meditation, ritual for yoga, scripture for self-help books, it’s obvious that we want and indeed need to reflect on the spiritual depth of our lives, free from the chains of superstition and dogma. My research into the function and meaning of religious language reveals how even the most hardnosed atheist can adopt, and reap the benefits of, religious practices, traditions, and vocabulary, without also being required to believe in the literal existence of any deity.
