N2 - The paper re-examines a famous incident which had previously been written about by a leading legal historian, relying on law reports, and a famous Welsh historian, relying on Star Chamber documents, neither of whom appears to have known of the other sources. The paper brings both strands together to achieve a fuller understanding of the incident and argues that the conflict was not only political, but can only be properly understood as a clash of two legal cultures in the wake of the union of Wales and England two decades previously.
