This article expands knowledge of Jarry's work by building on avenues opened up by Fisher's monograph on the author, The Pataphysician's Library (2000), which has been described by reviewers as 'essential reading' (French Studies), offering 'much of value to later generations' (MLR). The study, commissioned by the journal editors, draws both on the extensive primary work for the monograph and fresh research on the two manuscript versions of one of Jarry's main works. Discrete and consistent patterns of inaccuracy are identified and explored in the two manuscripts (known as Lormel and Fasquelle). The article draws comparisons with works by authors known personally to Jarry, in particular Kahn, Mallarmé, Mendès and Rachilde. In these cases a private and often ludic frame of reference is established. It is concluded that in Jarry's work as well, the inconsistencies which have puzzled editors and critics are not in fact the errors or lapses in attention that they have generally been taken for.
