N2 - This article examines the development of cricket in Caernarfonshire, Anglesey and Merioneth during the early Victorian period. It is established that cricket was present in the region from a far earlier period than has hitherto been claimed. Reasons for its relative failure to take hold compared to the northeast, in which the sport flourished from an early period, are suggested and analysed.
