I am a Researcher at the School of Ocean Sciences with a background in molluscan biology, sclerochronology, conservation, and sustainable aquaculture.  In 1999 I completed a BSc in Marine Biology followed by an M.Sc in Shellfish Biology, Fisheries and Culture in 2000 from Bangor University. I was awarded a PhD from Bangor for my work on aspects of cephalopod biology in 2010.

I have over 20 years’ experience in molluscan biology, sclerochronology, animal husbandry, conservation and sustainable aquaculture production, as well as hatchery design and construction. During this time, I have worked both alongside and within the commercial aquaculture industry as well as with Welsh Government agencies. During my time at the School of Ocean Sciences I have taken a leading role on various EU-funded aquaculture projects (SEAFARE, SNAP, ISPP & NOAR).  Recent work has included the development of novel culture techniques for several coral reef fish species in collaboration with leading UK public aquariums, as well as the optimisation of culture techniques for the Native oyster, Ostrea edulis for the table/restoration initiatives.

I have also worked as a Senior Aquarist at a public aquarium, a self-employed Aquatic Consultant, and as a Larval Room Superintendent at a commercial finfish hatchery.  Particular areas of interest include; sustainable aquaculture practices, animal welfare, aquaculture-based fisheries stock enhancement and conservation, sustainable resource management, aquaculture technologies, and in particular, the development of novel culture techniques for coral reef fish and invertebrate species.
